International Sign Language (ISL)

Many people in deaf communities around the world use sign languages as their primary means of communication. These communities include both deaf and hearing people who converse in sign language. But for many deaf people, sign language serves as their primary, or native, language, creating a strong sense of social and cultural identity. Sign language can also be used as an alternative means of communication by hearing people. For example, in the United States during the 19th century, groups of Native Americans in the Plains who spoke different languages used a sign language now known as Plains Indian Sign Talk to communicate with each other. BUT, one of the most important problems of hearing impaired people is INTERNATIONAL sign language, because they can't understand other sign language very well. So, we want to start this project and speak about sign language in different countries and collect the words and make a website for international sign language in different languages.

Title: International Sign Language (ISL)
  • Summary: A project to speak about sign language in different countries and collect the words and make a website for international sign language in different languages.
  • Facilitator(s): Mandana_Noroozi
  • Country: Iran
  • Languages:
  • Student Age Level: 5-11
  • Contributions: With the start of the information Technology era people of the planet have an invaluable tool to promote peace through better understanding of each other's culture, history..etc. Hearing impaired human beings have fewer chances to enjoy the benefits of meeting with their peers and also hearing people as well. In an international Deaf and Hearing Impaired Conference in Turkey Sept, 2004, on how to overcome the problems of teachers working in hearing impaired schools, I proposed and was able to form a group from USA, Arab states and Turkey to work on this project.
  • Outcomes: We are seeking a solution for hearing impaired students from all over the globe to be able to communicate face to face with an international sign language. The impact of such interactions is well know in iEARN we would like them to experience what normal hearing students benefit and give them a chance to share their thoughts and mutual problems with each other. And no one would know how to initiate such campaign better than hearing impaired students.
