Summary: An opportunity for teachers and students locally and globally to examine the issues of poverty and homelessness by utilizing a variety of digital technologies.
Description: The project is designed to include a variety of entry and exit points for teachers and students. The goals of the project are to: - encourage students to become active citizens in their local, national and global communities - allow students to develop a strong understanding of the many issues of poverty and homelessness as it applies to local, national and global perspectives - encourage students to communicate a specific message clearly, accurately, and appropriately within a given context through the use of a variety of literacy formats - make school and district staff knowledgeable about and responsive to the value and use of educational technologies for teaching, learning and building organizational capacity - to provide school and district staff access to professional development opportunities that build foundations for innovative practices through the use of technology and to demonstrate its effectiveness - provide a strong technical learning environment for teachers and students - develop and provide outstanding interactive, digital learning objects to support the goals of this project - build an online community of practice to enable teachers to maintain and develop the professional learning (community of practice) component of the environment - encourage teachers to utilize a distributed model to support the development of local, national and global citizenship projects - gather research to measure: o the effectiveness of professional development support for participating teachers o a shift in teacher practice in regard to the utilization of technology to support teaching and learning o the impact on student engagement and success in learning

- Contributions: The ultimate goal of this project is to ask students to become active participants who realize that they can make a difference by: 1) Examining and understanding the issues of Poverty and Homelessness 2) Understand what role they can play as individuals in making a difference (“The Power of One.”).
- Outcomes: Through this proof of concept, the purpose/outcomes of the Many Faces of Poverty and Homelessness project will be to: ?Create a collaborative online learning environment designed to support collaborative learning and act as a publishing centre for submitted work ?Support participating teachers by facilitating connections with teachers throughout the world ?Utilize a variety of digital tools to support learning including o Pod casting o Video/audio conferencing o Utilization of video and multimedia tools for learning o Creation of digital multimedia as representation of learning o Online student and expert online discussions o “Blogging” opportunities o The use and development of digital learning objects for classroom use ?Create a professional community of practice ?Offer professional development support to participating teachers via video conferencing, online discussions, and where possible, face-to-face opportunities ?Facilitate the support of online and face to face “experts” from various organizations around the world. The Many Faces of Poverty and Homelessness project will offer flexible opportunities for students to explore the concepts of Poverty and Homelessness as it applies to local and global perspectives through a variety of “special projects” including but not exclusive to: 1. The Impact of AIDS/HIV on Poverty and/or Homelessness 2. The Impact of Drug and Alcohol Abuse on Poverty and/or Homelessness 3. The Impact of Natural Disasters on Poverty and/or Homelessness 4. The Impact of War on Poverty and/or Homelessness 5. Exploring the “Living Wage:” How does what we pay employees impact poverty and/or homelessness? 6. The Cycle of Child Poverty and Homelessness: Is there a connection? 7. The Role of Education on Poverty and/or Homelessness 8. Affordable Transportation: How does “getting around”: impact one’s ability to avoid poverty and/or homelessness? 9. The United Nations Millennium Goals: What role can these goals have on eliminating/diminishing poverty and/or homelessness?
