Summary: Beirut19 is an off-shoot of the Beirut39 event to provide a platform for young writers to share, explore their talents and debate crucial issues.

Beirut19 Over-arching Goals:
- To engage Arab youth in critical discourse on power, identity, globalization and Arab culture
- To promote literary expression and encourage young people to read and write
- To explore young Arab talents
Project details:
In this project students can submit short stories, essays, analysis, critical views, and journalistic pieces ranging between 1,000 to 2,500 words around one of the two following themes:
- Power and identity in the 21st Century
- Arab culture in a globalized world
The 39 young finalists will be featured on the Beirut39 website www.beirut39.com and will be invited to join the online debates and discussions.
The 4 top finalists (2 from each category, one in each age group) will be invited to participate in the Beirut39 Book Festival in March 2010. The finalists will be featured at the iEARN International conference in Canada in 2010
Who can participate?
- Students from Arab nationality
- Submissions will be via schools
- The jury will be announced in September and will consist of prominent people in the literary and education field.
Age group:
- Age 12 to 19 (grouped in two age group: 12 to 15 and 16 to 19)
- Participants need to be of Arab nationality
- Languages: English, Arabic and French
Timeline:
- October: Launch the project with the announcement of the Beirut39 winners
- November 2009: Registration
- November 2009 – January 2010: Submissions
- February 2010: Screening and selection
- March 2010: Announcement of finalist
- April 2010: Festival – Beirut39
