Title: Visions of Me: Self Portraits

Summary: Students in different parts of the world design a self portrait using digital photography, and manipulate the image(s) using a software such as Adobe Photoshop, or using available materials to create their self-portrait.

Description: Overall lesson concept: • To design a self portrait using either computer software or traditional media like paint or pastels to create a self-portrait centering on the theme “Visions of Me” that does not include self in his or her entirety. • Concepts like fragmentation, or part-to-whole, or creating a collage can be applied to this assignment. My students keyword image searched “photographic self-portraits” to first gain insight on some photographic solutions within the Google database. • Every participant needs to begin with a photograph of him or herself, and then will build upon this to create a unique visual solution that defines self without saying it in a visually whole manner. Consideration needs to be given to the camera angle, to lighting effects, and to the composition layout as a whole. • After the artwork is complete, every artist will sign their piece, title their piece, and display the title with the artwork. • The following questions should be considered by each artist: o How much of me do I need to show to be recognized as me? o How can I define myself by my community or my friends or my family? o How does my environment influence who I become? o What mood do I want to express in this vision of myself, and what colors best represent this mood? o How will I contrast textural areas with smooth areas?
