The AYV project started in Pashet school in September with eight fantastic girls from the Year 9 art class. The group began by watching the powerful documentary ‘Every good Marriage Beings with Tears’ which reflected issues that were familiar to them as Muslim girls growing up in East London. The film challenged their preconceptions about the documentary form in general and there was plenty of healthy debate before the group finally settled on the story they wanted to tell. Eventually they decided to investigate something that they all felt strongly about – how boys their age get so much more freedom than girls do. It was originally planned that Johura would lead the story as she had brothers at home - however it turned out that Johura’s family were not happy to be filmed. The plan B that was agreed upon was filming with Shamila (even though she didn’t have brothers!) The first day of filming took place at Shamila’s house and she was interviewed with her Mum who spoke about how little freedom she had as a girl. This Friday the crew are embarking on their third day of filming and are hoping to get a start on the editing before Christmas. Back to Album: Adobe Youth Voices Album
